A basic building block for healthy communities is healthy people. There is access to multitudes of data to track the health and welfare of people in cities at the macro level. The next step is to develop ways to improve upon these items at the micro level. Looking for and targeting the potential sources of poor health and chronic diseases is a good first step. Some of these factors include: an abundance of fast-food restaurants, the number of liquor stores, the presence of drugs, the quality of the water available, and the air quality or proximity to high amounts of air pollution.
